WMF Scholar Sickle Cell Disease Outreach in Kenya

An update from the field: Emmanuel Mabibo of Kenya continues his outreach to inform communities about Sickle Cell Disease. He is shown meeting with the Mtwapa area chief and community leaders, north of Mombasa, Kenya. Emmanuel is raising awareness of this genetically inherited disease. Nearly three quarters of Sickle Cell Disease cases are documented in African countries. Complications if not treated include, stroke, acute chest syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, organ damage, blindness, skin ulcers, and gallstones. Early diagnosis and treatments can help provide longer and healthier lives.
