OUTCOME OF THE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
I am very glad to inform you about the outcome of the scholarship Wells Mountain Foundation awarded me. The scholarship is a blessing to me and my community. It has impacted my life and locality tremendously through various ways. Hence, I would not hesitate to express my profound gratitude to all members of this noble organization, and the Almighty God who has been the catalyst in the process of this humanitarian work.
First and foremost, the scholarship has empowered me in several ways. It has changed my attitudes such as mind-set and activities drastically. My thought is no longer focused on trivial things, but more important things to a change in my community in Ghana in the face of challenges. Thus, I have already begun identifying community problems and devising ways of addressing them. In this light, I have identified educational and environmental (sanitation) problems and I have started addressing them in the Buduburam Community. For education, there has been massive failure of students in the West African Examinations and school dropout of students in the community over the years due to several factors. Besides, the community is encompassing with filthiness since the withdrawal of the UNHCR Agency support due to the cessation clause of the refugees’ law. Equipment such as dustbin, containers and tractors were handed over to the District and Local Authorities to take over from the UNHCR Agency for refugee. However, this plan for the refugees who have chosen local integration has been marginalized leading to contagious diseases and sudden death in this former refugees’ community. Therefore, I have established a group (my fellow university students known as the Buduburam Voluntary Service Team-BVOSET) to assist me to battle against these challenges in the community. The group is currently operating on voluntary basis in these two areas. We are teaching in the schools within the vicinity during normal classes and extra classes. The major challenge the group or I the initiator/CEO has is transportation fare for BVOSET members in and out of campuses to the community.
Moreover, I thought it expedient to uphold and demonstrate the mission and vision of Wells Mountain Foundation because I do strongly believed I am a bona-fide member of this philanthropic organization and must conduct myself as such.
Also, I have identified myself with a gentleman on the refugee camp who has collected children whose parents cannot afford to sponsor their kids in school. He is working very hard to help the kids. BVOSET is also supplementing his effort by teaching there. The building and furniture they are using is worrying including feeding the kids has been the major problem. He can only ask the parents to buy books, exercise books, pencils and other stationery for the children to be attending classes. He has impressed BVOSET so the group has seen reason to offer assistance to him for achieving the MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL TWO(2) which is universal primary education in 2015.
I must admit that it has been very challenging combining academic work, voluntary service, part-time work and leadership functions in my Associations together. However, I am doing my best, but transportation fare has been my challenge. Almost every day I am busy, I do not have any leisure time. I do attend meetings and other functions as a leader including church services. All these and my laptop that is stolen are contributing to my inability to visit my e-mail regularly for information.
