I have come; I have been shown and I have seen a lot; I have been given and I have received a lot. From the moment I won WMF scholarship, It has all seemed as if I have been in a world only described in Children’s books of fairy tales, of magic carpets, and glittering gold, and magic wands which whenever you wave, bring you anything you wish or ask for. Again and again,I have asked myself whether I have been living in this child’s world, or in the real world of grown-up men and women.Yet it has been the real world all right; WMF has opened it’s heart spontaneously, generously and sincerely to me and made the world seem like a magic world even to grown-up politicians.
I speak the truth when I say my gratitude can not be expressed in words. I think of the planning, the hard work and the loving care that must have been put in to preparations for my studies; the tuition, fees and books; the room and board and supplies that were accorded me. The magnificent medical bills; every detail that has been though of for my comfort. How can I adequately express my thanks for all this? I must also confess that today, I feel a great sense of relief and joy to think that, at long last, a first significant step has been taken towards the positive realization and consummation of a long cherished dream. As a WMF scholar, it is my goal to work with humanitarian Organisation to overcome our problems of poverty, Ignorance, and disease. Hence, I am volunteering on the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana with the Liberian Refugee Welfare Council (LRWC) Designing an Access 2007 Database, Installing office applications and antivirus on desktop computers.
The Buduburam Refugee Camp was established on the 19th October, 1990 upon the agreement between the government of Ghana and the chiefs of Gomoa district Central Region and the United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR ). The Camp is situated at about 45 miles west of the capital, Accra on a piece of land of about 25 square miles. It hosts about 55,000 Refugees most of whom are from Liberia ( 65%) Sierra Leone (15%) Togo (4%) and Ivory Coast (6%). Refugees at Buduburam were chased out of Liberia and entered the bordering countries. They were chased from Sierra Leone to Guinea, from Guinea to Ivory Coast and from the Ivory Coast to Ghana; therefore, Refugees in Ghana have peculiar cases. Because the war was protracted, wicked and unchristian-Refugees at Buduburam decided to established themselves for their sustenance. Buduburam is filled with the fatherless, the motherless, the Orphans and those who got no connection to their families and villages in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cote d’ Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
Thanks to the WMF for making me a scholar and a humanitarian social worker in the field of Information Technology. We must not underrate the task ahead of us on our forward march to freedom; on our forward march to justice; on our forward march to eradicate poverty,Ignorance and disease. It is most exacting and colossal. Success will only come our way if we face this threat with indomitable courage and tenacity of purpose.
