A big THANK YOU to our 40 Scholarship application reviewers!
We would like to thank our scholarship application reviewers. With the overwhelming number of applications received in 2011, almost 1000, eight times the number last year, we definitely needed help. Your efforts at screening ensured that every scholarship application was read at least once and helped focus attention on the best candidates.
We were able to award 28 scholarships that ranged from $300 to $3000 per year. This new class of Scholars consists of 15 men and 13 women who come from a dozen different countries with Uganda taking the lead with 11 scholars. Other countries represented are Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda and Cameroon. Ages range from 19 to 34 with the average age of 24. Seven are orphans, three are refugees, three have children, two are HIV positive and one was a boy-soldier. Many have experienced civil war and genocide and seven lost at least one parent due to these circumstances. On a brighter note, 11 actively volunteer for an HIV/AIDS organization in their country and eight volunteer as teachers of reading, math, computer skills or English. We have eight scholars studying to be doctors, six studying business, five in social work, three in psychology/counseling and two each in education, computer science, and community health/nursing.
We will contact you next spring to see if you would like to review 2012 applications. Your assistance with the applications was integral in helping WMF make a small difference in the world, one newly educated scholar at a time.
