First and foremost I would like to thank Wells mountain foundation for the financial support towards my academics.
The first rotation was pediatrics, followed by psychiatry and lastly obstetrics and gynecology. I wrote about my experience on pediatric ward in the previous report.
At first I was scared of the mentally sick patients thinking that they were violent , aggressive or harmful. However, even though a few can be dangerous, mentally sick people are like any other patient that needs care and attention. It was wonderful interacting, taking care of these patients plus having the myths demystified.
At the obstetric and gynecological ward, it has been a moment of acquiring more skills. As part of the training we have been going out to Fort portal regional referral hospital where we actively participated in the management pregnant mothers. Because it is a government hospital , the services are purely free and the patients turn up is very high. We worked day and night delivering mothers, assisting in theatre and in the general nursing care. Something which remained a concern to me is the high prevalence of HIV( almost 40-50 %) among younger mothers ( 18-25 years). Although it is a regional referral hospital where patients from different health units are referred, it is a sign of danger that needs intervention. Most of these girls are from rural poor families , uneducated, possibly some are forced into marriage , ignorant about HIV or may not have a participatory right in HIV prevention. Sexual decisions are majorly determined or made by male partners leaving women vulnerable to HIV.
It is always my desire to be part of those that are working towards improving the health status of communities especially in rural areas.
