Allow me share with you my experience i got from a training on Anti-corruption and Good governance.As part of my strategy/initiative and a major point of plan,i am privileged to inform you that i have attended a training workshop on the above subject to equip me with the skills of alleviating the rampant corruption in my country.I convey my sincere gratitude to you for the support that you are awarding me to be studying that makes me to get such a kind of trainings as per as my course is concerned.
The workshop was organized by an association of South Sudanese in Kampala international university focusing at promoting good governance and fighting corruption that has resulted into underdevelopment in most African countries and elsewhere in the world.Therefore,being the young generation of the new nation of South Sudan,we youth of the country believed in acquiring such skills and knowledge that we would use to impart into the public through sensitization to curb corruption for effective development of our country by ensuring zero tolerance to corruption and good governance.
Basically the workshop covered the following contents in details:
1-What is corruption and anti corruption?
2-What is good governance?
3-Indicators / characteristics of good governance.
4-Causes of corruption.
5-Strategies that have been put forward to tackle corruption in Uganda as a case study.
6-Solution to corruption problem in Africa and world at large.
To highlight or mention briefly what transpired in the workshop as per the contents above are concerned,corruption is defined as unlawful misuse or mismanagement of public funds for personal gain / in other words,its the diversion of public assets for individual gain.While anti corruption refers to the fight against corruption through laying strategies,agencies and taking action to tackle the evil of corruption.
Good governance refers to the way of controlling organizations,institutions and people by enacting laws.Some of the indicators of good governance includes:Accountability to the public,transparency,efficiency and effectiveness.
Then to the major point of concern,the major causes of corruption in Africa highlighted as:poverty,ignorance,selfishness,moral decay,unequal development,unequal distribution of resources,illiteracy,greedy,tribalism,limited capacity of anti-corruption
agencies,lawlessness and wage differences among others.
Taking in examples of case studies in Uganda of strategies and Acts undertaken by the government to fight corruption includes:public service accountability,national strategy to fight corruption,inspector general of government,penal code act,public accounts act,budget act,leadership code of act,access to information act,anti money laundry bill,whistle blowers bill and so many others.but despite the above agencies and acts in Uganda,corruption has persisted due to inefficiency in implementation of the activities etc
Solutions to corruption in Africa and the world includes:government must include anti corruption measures in the development strategies if progress is to be made,setting up anti corruption agencies to fight corruption,Any corrupt person must face the courts of laws and punished if found guilty (criminalization),practice of transparency and good governance,sensitization of masses on corruption and public opinion must support anti corruption programs and many more that i could not mention here.
In conclusion,the fight against corruption begins by “ME and YOU” meaning i and you need to ask my self whether am corrupt or not? and if not then am in the right track and can begin telling others about the evil corruption and “together we can” curb corruption in our societies and countries.We youth of South Sudan vowed to set up a voluntary agency to promote awareness on corruption as an evil,fighting it out and promoting good governance through sensitization of the masses.
